"Snake rattle and roll"
An asteroid containing creepy crawlies crashes to Earth, unleashing an alien menace that must be confronted by the local small town law enforcement before it spreads over the rest of the planet. Sound familiar? The standard plot from a 1950s B-movie picture gets modernized with a horror comedy patina by director James Gunn's (Super). Gunn includes many nods to the great films of the past while keeping the amusement high, with no small help by stalwart leading man (and goof off) Nathan Fillion (Firefly). The cartoonish levels of gore and chuckles are straight from the Troma play book, not surprising considering Gunn's background, he provides enough genuine sci-fi ideas and laughs to separate it from being just a derivative genre knock-off.
6 Bathtub boogie men out of 10 (GOOD)
